DRAFT Trench warfare impacted fighting in World War I by allowing new stratigies that improved soilders fighting advantages. Using Trench Warfare helped many soilders in fighting but it also had its disadvantages, some examples are deadly diseases, hygiene problems and rats.
Some of the advantages of using trench warfare in world war i was: "easy to make, easy to defend, cheap to build, don't need lots of men to defend them."(Mr.Moorhouse. schoolhistory) To many americans it seems that trench warfare was a good idea in world war I, it seems easy and helpful to use. "Fighting in the trenches had its disadvantages along with its advantages. Some of the disadvantages were diseases were cold flu, some of the worse diseases were trench foot and trench fever, these were the most deadly of the trench diseases."(Mr.Moorhouse. shcoolhistory) At first the trenches sounded like a good thing, but with all the diseases it seems that it is very dangerous to the soilders health and could even kill some of them.
Some of the horrible conditions of trench warfare was the diseases. It was first recognized a a horrible disease in world war i. Some of the symptoms "were high fever, headache, sore muscles, and outbreaks of skin lesions." (Britannica Concise Encyclopedia) The soilders tired to fight with these conditions but sometimes it went to far. Men who fought in world war i, and used the trench system suffered from body lice. The lice left"blotch red bites all over the body."(spartacus) Different ways were used to get rid of the lice, one of the ways was to burn them off. This practice was fairly hard to do without burning your clothes in the process. In the trenches rats were constant disruptions. They carried many deadly diseases, the men tried killing them but these rats could grow to the size of a cat, and could "poduce up to 900 offspring a year."(hubpages) When using the trenches many men suffered from shell shock. Some of the "symptoms included tiredness, irritability, giddiness, lack of concentration and headaches." ( hubpages) Some of the men suffered form mental breakdowns which made it compleatly impossible for them to remain on the front line. Being on the front line was a dangerous task but many soilders took the risk for their country anaway.
When the soilders were making the trenches they had to dig about 2 meters deep and about a meter wide. Different sides of the trench were used for different things, for example, the side of the trench facing the enemy was called a "fire step," (Mr.Moorhouse. schoolhistory) this was used for soilders to shoot from.In the begining of world war I soilders made trenches "to protect themsleves from enemy fire." (Hatt, Christine) The trenches were not very devolped in the begining but as the war went on the soilders made the trenches more complex. No mans land was used to describe the land between 2 trenches. This land had a good amount of barbed wire, "where the areas that got attacked the most they put up ten belts of barbed wire just before the front line trenches."(spartacus) If you were a soilder on the front line you were putting yourself in a very dangerous position. Some of the soilders would even be hit by there own gunfire. To be on the front line you must be dedicated, and brave soilder for you are risking your life for you country.
These trenches had many advantages along with some diadvantages. Without these trenches The Great War would have had a different outcome.
