Topic- Music during World War 1 What i already know
Who- Jazz music What- Music was often used as a propaganda to spread ideas and display or persuade people. Where- In America When- 1914- 1919 Why- Used as a form of entertainment and fun. Also used to persuade people. How- Used political thoughts and ideas in songs to send messages to people, kind of like forcing it on them. My research strategy:
who- i can ask Ms. horn about any questions i have about the project. I could also ask Mrs. Brem about books or computers in the library that i need help using.
What- Any books or encyclopedia in the library, online databases, or even expert web sites.
When- In 1st period class time, or also as homework if needed.
Where- At the Cross timbers library and my computer at home.

World War I influlenced music by the production of new songs about war, and the use of Propaganda, to express political ideas. These new and different changes to the types of music, set this decade apart from any other one. It was more unique then any other era. The use of Propaganda, sometimes known as a type of brainwashing, was also a major change in the music industry. Many artists were inspired so much by the war, that the creation of war songs was booming. Jazz and Ragtime were also among the hit catagories of new music.
Most everything such as national anthems or any type of "political" songs became very popular during the wartime. Many were on a "patriotic high" and had a lot of pride in their country. These war songs and anthems were very important to many. Not only did they bind many Americans together, but they also served a "special purpose." It was used to urge Americans to believe certain thoughts about the war. Ideas were mainly iquired in most types of these "patriotic" songs. During the quick growing industry and demand of something new, music was one of the most important things that changed. These new political songs became some of the highly favored (Parlor Songs).
Music was a very effective pursuasive technique. Everything from the words, to the beat and rhthym of the song was used for thoughts and ideas of the war. These songs swept the nation, helping the goal of the propagandists greatly.(Parlor Songs) Many music artists expressed their ideas and thoughts about what was going on and what they thought about the war. A numberous amount of these artists were successful and the songs became a hit. The types of music used were very important becuase if the right beat was used it would stick in a person's head, leaving them humming the familar tune all day.(Parlor Songs) Listening to the song again would be a desire. The songs had to have a good beat to keep the listener interested in hearing the words that kept them singing.
While the new craze of dancing and The Swing, Jazz had become an instant hit. Many loved the new songs played and The Swing was a fun and an entertaining dance style for anyone and everyone!(Jazz Music Hit) For many, jazz was new and different from anything anyone else ever heard before. It was incomparable, not following the rules of normal music, and some didn't accept this new style .(PBS) Ragtime also was booming during this time period. It was a good way for women, children,and soilders, to have fun in their free time. They were able to entertain themselves by playing songs and singing together.(Ragtime soilders) In the 1919's a new style of music, known as jazz music became a "popular craze" that was sweeping the nation. Many people became intrested in new music, and also broadway shows, consisting of dance and these new types of music. (Fienstien) Jazz was just many of the new types of music that participated in the growth of what we have today.
Overall, music was a very important role to America during World War I. It was a source of entertainment for some, and for others, it was a way to get into the war, and keep their spirits lifted. Music then had a great effect on what we have today, and has evolved into something great. Styles such as Jazz and Ragtime were old time classics and will be remeberd for eternity. Propaganda was a great way for musicians and artists to get their point and opinion across about the war itself.
